PostSubject: Childers remembers fire victims   June 23rd 2010, 2:18 am

A decade on from the horrific hostel fire that claimed 15 lives, the Queensland town of Childers will pause to remember.

Wednesday marks the 10th anniversary of the Palace Backpackers Hostel blaze on June 23, 2000.

Most of those who died were travellers from around the world who'd come to sample Queensland's relaxed atmosphere and natural beauty but they never went home.

Robert Paul Long saw to that when he deliberately set the hostel ablaze, trapping people inside. Long is serving a life sentence for murder and arson.

Relatives of some of the victims are expected to attend a memorial service to be held in the town at 4pm (AEST). Deputy Premier Paul Lucas will be among those to attend.

Firefighter Col Santacaterina has told the ABC that his images of the fire remain strong, a decade on.

"We just thought it was another call - a fire at the backpackers - that's all it said," he said.

He said there was little anyone could do for those who ultimately lost their lives.

"Fire - just orange and red fire everywhere," he said.

"I think we got 74 or 72 (people) out or something like that, but unfortunately 15 didn't make it."
